Abortion

Our staff members are dedicated to treating each patient as an individual. At our offices you will always receive individualized care. Since each patient presents her own set of issues and concerns, all of our counseling/educational sessions are conducted on a one-to-one basis by compassionate professionals with experience in counseling women.

In order to meet the needs of a diverse population, our staff speaks a variety of foreign languages. Numerous employees are able to speak the following languages: Spanish, Russian, French, Polish, Japanese, Chinese, and Creole.

New York State Law does not require parental consent for pregnancy testing or abortions. Our members have extensive experience maintaining confidentiality for young women choosing to have an abortion. Our convenient office hours provide for the flexibility necessary to accommodate even the most restrictive schedules. If you are a minor, we encourage you to discuss this decision with your parents, but, if you choose not to, we will respect your privacy.

The OBGYN Pavilion is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and is held to the highest standard of medical care possible. Our Surgeons and Anesthesiologists are highly trained and board certified.

The OBGYN Pavilion has a 24 hour emergency hotline which gives patients immediate access to our medical team.

Non-Surgical Abortion

What is a non-surgical abortion?

Women seeking a termination of pregnancy may choose a non-surgical method, sometimes called medical abortion. The abortion pill, also known as Mifeprex, has been approved by the FDA for terminating early pregnancies. The FDA has tested it for both safety and effectiveness. It is now approved for use in more than 23 countries.

Non-surgical abortion is a non-invasive procedure for terminating a pregnancy in the comfort of your own home. The procedure is similar to the miscarriage and requires two visits to The OBGYN Pavilion. Non-surgical abortion will stop your pregnancy from growing and vaginal suppositories will help expel your pregnancy. Since there is always a statistically small chance of failure with this method, you must be willing to have a surgical abortion if the non-surgical abortion fails.

At the OBGYN Pavilion Mifeprex is offered to women who are no more than seven weeks pregnant. Mifeprex has been used by over a half a million women during the past decade for ending pregnancy.

The Morning After Pill

Emergency Contraceptive Pills (ECP)
What is “the Morning-after Pill”?

Emergency contraception more commonly known as “the morning-after pill” is two large doses of hormones, similar to the ones in the birth control pill. The first dose must be taken within 72 hours of unprotected or inadequately protected intercourse, followed by a second dose 12 hours later. It is meant only as a back-up method of birth control to be used on an emergency basis only if you believe there has been a failure in your current method of birth control (i.e. when a condom breaks, if you have missed 2 or more days of the pill, etc).

How does the Morning-after Pill work? The morning-after pill will prevent or delay the release of an egg from the ovary if given prior to ovulation, or it will help prevent the egg from traveling down the fallopian tubes and implanting in the uterus if you have already ovulated. The morning-after pill reduces the chance of getting pregnant; it does NOT cause an abortion.

How effective is the Morning-after Pill? The morning-after pill is approximately 98-99% effective. However, the statistics of being pregnant rests greatly on where you are in your menstrual cycle. You are only fertile at the time of ovulation. If 100 women each had a single act of unprotected intercourse on one day in the middle of their cycle and then take the morning-after pill, only 2 to 3 will get pregnant.

STD Testing, Treatment and Counseling

The OBGYN Pavilion offers compassionate, informed and up-to-date STD testing, treatment and counseling. The OBGYN Pavilion’s knowledgeable staff has over 30 years training in recognizing and treating sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). If you think you have been exposed to an STD or are experiencing the symptoms of an STD, call 718-369-1900 to make an appointment for testing, treatment, and counseling on how to make responsible decisions regarding your sexual health.

If you feel that you may have been exposed to HIV/AIDS or an STD, it is important to remember that you can still transmit HIV/AIDS or STDs to others via sexual intercourse and needle sharing even if you are not currently experiencing any symptoms.

Most methods of birth control DO NOT PROVIDE PROTECTION against HIV/AIDS or sexually transmitted diseases. Only properly used LATEX condoms and barriers provide protection against HIV/AIDS and STDs.

Some common sexually transmitted diseases:

Gonorrhea
Syphilis
Genital Herpes
Chlamydia
Hepatitis B
Genital Warts
Trichomoniasis

At The OBGYN Pavilion, we emphasize our philosophy of Patient Power, which means being an informed consumer of medical treatment with the knowledge and information that enables each individual to make appropriate decisions about medial care, whether in the area of general health, surgery or birth control.

Facts About HIV

HIV is not transmitted from one person to another through any form of casual, non-intimate contact. HIV is transmitted through direct blood-to-blood or semen-to-blood exchange. Direct contact with other body fluids containing blood of an infected person also may increase the risk of HIV infection.

Some Questions and Answers about HIV and AIDS

  • Who is at risk for HIV infection? Most cases of AIDS are linked with unprotected sexual activity and intravenous (IV) drug use.
  • How do women get HIV infection? Women become infected by engaging in unprotected sexual intercourse or by sharing IV drug needles and works. More than 50% of women with HIV infection and AIDS have used drugs.
  • Can a person with no symptoms transmit HIV? Yes. Initially, most HIV infected people have no symptoms and are not even aware they are infected. Any infected person may transmit the virus to another person through sexual contact or sharing drug injection equipment.
The OBGYN Pavilion accepts HIV positive patients for all services. There are no special procedures or requirements for HIV positive patients. At The OBGYN Pavilion, we emphasize our philosophy of Patient Power, which means being an informed consumer of medical treatment with the knowledge and information that enables each individual to make appropriate decisions about medial care, whether in the area of general health, surgery or birth control.
